The Complete Works of William Shakespeare online


Digital History A comprehensive historical resource that covers U.S. History with virtual exhibitions, investigates current controversies, and includes an extensive list of helpful resources to students studying American History.


MasterFile Premier should be used for most general topics and school assignments. Search over 1,950 popular magazines and journals. This resource also contains biographies, primary sources and an image collection.


Rhode Island Images Providence Public Library's Rhode Island Image Collection contains over 7,000 photographs of people, places and buildings available in print and online.


World Factbook The online edition presented by the C.I.A which includes country profiles and maps.


The World Wide Web Virtual Library Established as a comprehensive tool that provides a directory of online resources under each respective historical category.



Online Encyclopedias


Encyclopedia Britannica is an expanded version of their website offering the complete content of this classic encyclopedia.  You must provide your library card number to access this database from home.


Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia online provides over 25,000 entries, covering a variety of subject areas.


World Book Encyclopedia

Select World Book Student, the version created especially for you. Or, for specialized research, check out a World Book Specialty Site or Digital Library.

Newspaper Research


American Historical Newspapers provides searchable access to American newspapers enabling users to explore America's past. Available here: Rhode Island's Historical Newspapers and America’s News Magazines.


New York Times Historical Archive


Newspaper Source offers full text articles from 20 national and 230 regional newspapers, as well as full-text transcripts from CBS, Fox and NPR News.


Providence Journal allows you to find feature articles, book reviews, wedding and birth announcements from 1984 to the present.

Biography Collection Complete has biographies on figures past and present.


Mango Languages is an online language-learning system that can help you learn languages including Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian and more.  You can gain a very basic understanding of the language or progress up through more challenging levels.  Mango languages also provides a translator page.


Topic Search is a current events database that allows you to explore social, political and economic issues, scientific discoveries, and other popular topics from today's classrooms.

It is a full-text database.


Heritage Quest allows you to research your own family history for school or for fun. Access from home


History Reference Center features full text for more than 1,620 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books from leading history publishers. The database also includes full text for more than 150 leading history periodicals, 57,000 historical documents, more than 77,000 biographies of historical figures, more than 113,000 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video.
