LONG RANGE PLAN

2008 - 2013

VISION STATEMENT

The mission of the Tiverton Library Services is to provide the means by which people of all ages, interests and circumstances may avail themselves of the recorded wisdom, experiences, and ideas of others for personal, educational, cultural, professional and recreational enrichment.

Collections of library materials, services, and programs are planned and developed to respond to community needs and interests’, assisting everyone’s continued personal growth and lifelong learning. These materials are assembled, organized and made accessible to all, recognizing that intellectual freedom is a foundation of a free society.

Trained and skilled staff and the latest affordable technologies are employed to facilitate and enhance the resources of the library’s services. Tiverton Library Services upholds the principals of the American Library Association.

 
Library Construction

OBJECTIVE: Build new public library facility for the town of Tiverton by 2012

GOAL ONE

EVALUATION : New library facility completed and open to public in 2012.

Library Facility

OBJECTIVE: Maintain current facility of main library

GOAL TWO

EVALUATION : Continue to maintain climate controlled storage site and funding.

Library Personnel

OBJECTIVE: Develop improved compensation plan for staff and provide continuing educational opportunities for all staff members.

GOAL THREE:

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually.

Library Services

OBJECTIVE: Strengthen and provide a full range of services to children less than five years of age.

GOAL FOUR:

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually.

OBJECTIVE: Improve outreach to school-age children in elementary grades

GOAL FIVE:

EVALUATION : Review annually. Introduce After-School and Saturday programming for school age children once a new facility is built.

EVALUATION : To be reviewed in the fall immediately following occupancy of the new library facility.

OBJECTIVE: Strengthen services to Young Adults in the 11 to 18 age range.

GOAL SIX:

EVALUATION: Review annually.

After moving to a new library increase programming to include programs held in the afternoons, evenings and weekends throughout the year to attract teens with busy schedules.

EVALUATION: To be included in the design and plan for the new library facility.

OBJECTIVE: Improve outreach to school-age youth in middle and high school grades.

GOAL SEVEN:

EVALUATION: To be reviewed annually.

OBJECTIVE: Improve adult programming

GOAL EIGHT:

EVALUATION : Attendance and popularity.

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually and immediately following occupancy of new library facility.

Library Outreach

OBJECTIVE: Improve library services to senior population.

GOAL NINE:

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually with the Senior Center’s Director and Directors from all other facilities.

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually pending funding availability.

OBJECTIVE: Revamp community service opportunities for school students and volunteer program for community residents

GOAL TEN:

EVALUATION : To be reviewed annually.

Library Marketing

OBJECTIVE: Enhance library’s marketing efforts

GOAL ELEVEN:

EVALUATION : To be reviewed quarterly.

EVALUATION : To reviewed monthly.

Library Technology

OBJECTIVE: Upgrade technology on a regular schedule

GOAL TWELVE:

EVALUATION : To Review Annually.

Tiverton Library Services Mission Statement and Technology Service Policy for 2008 - 2013

The mission of the Tiverton Library Services is to provide the means by which people of all ages, interests and circumstances may avail themselves of the recorded wisdom, experiences, and ideas of others for personal, educational, cultural, professional and recreational enrichment.

The Tiverton Library Services continues to participate in Rhode Island Libraries automated consortium (Ocean State Libraries) dedicated to sharing resources and advancing scholarship. This technology is maintained and updated with the most affordable and useful systems and electronic archives available. Trained and skilled staff is employed to facilitate and enhance these services made accessible to all, free of charge.

The Tiverton Library Services uphold the principals of the American Library Association and believes that intellectual freedom is a foundation of a free society.

Goals and Objectives

Goal: Technology infrastructure

Objectives:

Explore new technologies available on the market and how they improve/impact public service and pursue grants for such.

Evaluation: To be reviewed annually.

Goal: Staff training and improved communications

Objectives:

Evaluation: To be reviewed as necessary, at least once annually.

Goal: To expand information resources through technology at the library for the handicapped

Objective:

To write into Building Plan Program a large print computer reader for the visually impaired.

Evaluation: To be included in Building Plan Program.

To write a grant for the purchase of “text to voice” software.

Evaluation: To be reviewed annually.

Goal: To provide timely, accurate, and useful information via the Library’s web page

Objective:

Maintain a homepage that contains links to information about the library, its history, its staff and policies, resources, fundraising opportunities and efforts, and library construction progress, as well as reference information and links useful to the community patrons.

Evaluation: To be reviewed monthly or as needed.

Goal: To establish the Library as steward of a “Resources and Information Commons” for the Town

Objective:

To recommend and propose a plan for implementing a “Resource and Information Commons” shared website for the Town which links the Library and Town Hall shared data, documents and public access information that will serve the common good.

Evaluation: Bi-annual assessment of this shared effort.
